The 5 Mass Extinctions

1 - 440 million years ago. An Ice Age encased the entire Earth causing the demise of many land species. Glacial melting caused ocean levels to rise, depleting oxygen and causing the extinction of many aquatic species. 85% of all species were wiped out.

2 - 375 million years ago. As aquatic plants colonized land they left fewer aquatic plants to create oxygen for the sea life. Rapid colonization of land plant life changed the balance of the atmosphere causing extinction of land-based species. 80% of all species were wiped out.

3 - 250 million years ago, “The Great Dying”. This was the largest of all mass extinctions. The cause was massive volcanic activity and maybe asteroid impacts wrecking Earth's atmosphere. 96% of all species were wiped out.

4 - 200 million years ago. Over an 18 million year span volcanic activity caused climate change, sea level changes, and pH level changes in the Earth's oceans. 50% of all species disappeared.

5 - 65 million years ago. This is the extinction when the dinosaurs perished. It is well documented that a major asteroid impact caused this mass extinction when it hit the Earth and created an "impact winter" that devastated the climate across the entire planet. About 75% of all species were wiped out.

This album is meant to be listened to in its entirety at one sitting. Each piece was inspired by the emotions and visualizations that arose from researching and thinking about the mass extinctions that took place over the long history of our Earth.
